Sugar Cookies

As promised here is the recipe for the sugar cookies featured in Hooray for Valentines Day!
These cookies are soft and not too sweet and I’m including an icing recipe for you to frost them with! The recipe is one that was passed down from a friend and I’ve modified it slightly. We really love these cookies and I’m pretty sure you will too!

List of ingredients:

1 1/4 cups sugar
3/4 cup shortening
1 egg
1/2 tsp vanilla
3 cups flour
1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 salt
1/4 tsp baking soda
3/4 cup heavy cream

Cream sugar and shortening in large bowl. Add eggs and vanilla and mix. Set aside.
In a separate bowl measure out all 4 dry ingredients and combine.
Add dry ingredients to the creamed mixture slowly along with the heavy cream and mix.
Form large ball and refrigerate for a minimum of 2 hours. Overnight is fine.

Remove from fridge. Roll out a small amount of dough to around 1/4″ thickness
on a lightly floured surface. Cut out shapes and place on lightly greased cookie sheet.
Bake at 350 degrees for 8-10 minutes being very careful not to over bake.
Let cool completely before icing.



1 1/4 cup powdered sugar
2 tbsp milk
2 tsp corn syrup (light is fine)
1/4 tsp pure vanilla extract
food colouring (optional)

Mix powdered sugar and milk. Stir in corn syrup and vanilla.
Add colour if desired.

A clean paintbrush is a great way to ice the cookies!
Add drops of 2 different colours and use end of paintbrush to swirl them together!
